14 DAY TRIAL // Secure Digital memory cards are used in everything from phones to cameras, and many other gadgets and accessories. And since this market is pretty stable at the moment, Kingston has gleefully launched a new collection of cards.
And they aren't just any cards either, but SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) models which exceed normal Class 3 performance by a great deal.
The UHS-I U3 (Ultra High-Speed Bus, Speed Class 3) specification from the SD Association defines memory cards that work at at least 30 MB/s read/write.
The new Kingston cards manage to write data at 80 MB/s and read it at 90 MB/s. Clearly, Kingston isn't pulling any punches.
And since the capacities are of 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB, the newcomers are pretty much ideal for 4K recording (UHD, 3,840 x 2,160 pixels).
Coincidentally, 90 MB/s read and 80 MB/s write are data rates 9 times and 8 times faster than the ones of normal Class 10 cards.
For those who want more of the technical details, the Kingston SDHC/SDXC UHS-I U3 Flash Cards have built-in write-protect switches (prevents data loss by overwriting), FAT32 file format for SDHC (16 GB-32 GB), and exFAT format for SDXC 64 GB.
They can also work at -25°C to 85°C temperatures, and stay in storage at -40°C to 85°C temperatures without suffering wear or damage.
They can even be used in devices without UHD-I support, although their performance will be limited to Class 10 standards.
Photo cameras, camcorders and video cameras will benefit from the newcomer the most, since they are especially useful in high-resolution, continuous shooting and burst capture modes. Television recording and live broadcasts are another pair of potential applications.
Sadly, Kingston did not share the pricing information on the SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 memory cards, though the tags are sure to be fairly high.
