Amazon.com, Inc. announced today that Android phone users should soon be able to benefit from a new, free application on their devices, namely Kindle for Android. The new software solution was meant to enable Android users to enjoy Kindle books on their handsets, and was expected to become available for them sometime during summer, the company stated. Through Kindle for Android, mobile-phone users can tap into the Kindle Store, where they will find a number of more than 540,000 books, the largest selection of popular books, including New York Times Bestsellers and New Releases from $9.99.

According to Amazon.com, Kindle for Android is similar to other Kindle applications, as it comes with Amazon's Whispersync technology, which has been developed so as to save and sync the users’ bookmarks across devices like Kindle, Kindle DX, the iPhone, iPod touch, the iPad, PC, Mac, BlackBerry and, of course, Android, as soon as the software solution is released. In other words, the solution is aimed at offering users the possibility to have their reading material no matter where they go.

“Kindle for Android is the perfect companion application for Kindle and Kindle DX owners, and is also a great way for customers to enjoy over 540,000 books in the Kindle Store even if they don’t yet have a Kindle,” Jay Marine, director, Amazon Kindle, said. “We think customers are going to love the convenience and simplicity of having instant access to a massive selection of books from Amazon on their Droid, Nexus, Incredible and many more Android devices.”

Among the features the Kindle for Android will be released with, we can count access to over 540,000 books available via the Kindle Store, including 96 of 110 New York Times Bestsellers, along with tens of thousands of popular classics. Android-phone owners will be able to enjoy bestsellers like “Backlash” by Aaron Allston, “Big Girl” by Danielle Steel, “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown, and many others more for only $9.99 or less.

The app also enables users to: - Browse by genre or author, and take advantage of all the features that customers enjoy in the Kindle Store, including Amazon.com customer reviews, personalized recommendations and editorial reviews; - Access their library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers for free; - Synchronize last page read between their Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, PC, Mac, BlackBerry and, soon, Android; - Choose from five different font sizes; - Read the beginning of books for free before they decide to buy; - Read in portrait or landscape mode, tap on either side of the screen or flick to turn pages.
