The development team at Guerrilla Games says that the new look for Killzone: Shadow Fall is designed to reflect the new mechanics of the video game and the increased computing power delivered by the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony.

Hermen Hulst, the studio director, tells Edge that, “One is a new conflict, where in the past we took inspiration from World War I and World War II type conflicts, this very much is a cold war setting, so you saw the city divided by this wall.”

The team wants to make Vekta City one of the main characters of the game, with interesting choices for the various buildings and subtle shifts in tone designed to reflect the underlying tensions.

He adds, “It looks different, our take on how we wanted to progress the franchise going into PS4 and also the player’s character. You’re now playing as a Shadow Marshall, part soldier, part spy. We wanted to really set the player up to now take on the powerful enemy properly.”

Guerrilla Games also says that players will get a chance to explore other types of environments, but Vekta City is designed to be the stage for the biggest moment of Killzone: Shadow Fall.

The new game will use brighter colors in order to show off the capabilities of the PlayStation 4.

Sony is keen to capture a wider array of gamers with its new titles, but the team is also interested in appealing to core gamers via some traditional ones.

The Killzone series has a tradition of being associated with the launch of new PlayStation platforms.

Killzone: Shadow Fall will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 4 from Sony when the new console is officially out.

The game is expected to be the start of a new first-person shooter for the device.
