Rate and rank stuff around you, see cool that others have ‘oinked’

Milk Inc., founded by Digg.com owner Kevin Rose, has launched Oink, a new iPhone app that lets you rate and rank things around you and see all the cool things your friends have oinked as well.

According to the official App Store description, Oink is the coolest new travel companion you could have on your iPhone:

“Oink is an easy way to rate and rank the things around you. Instead of just rating places, you rate the items inside. You could easily find the most popular items on a menu and see if a friend has tried anything there. Then if there's something you like, it’s just a single press to rate it and share it with friends.”

A short list of key features is then offered, of which I will highlight the ability to “see all the cool stuff your friends and other users are Oinking”, finding the best things in town, such as a pizza restaurant, building "cred" in areas of interest, and the usual social network integration - Facebook, Twiiter, and Foursquare sharing.

According to Chris Hutchins handling the support site for Oink, there isn't currently a way to delete or edit items that you may have mistakenly oinked with mistakes. Chris says “it's something we hope to make possible in the future. In the meantime, I'd be happy to fix something for you manually.”

Early adopters seem eager to know whether Milk Inc. is planning to build a recommendation engine on top of all the data the company is collecting.

Surely everything will fall into place in time, just like with Twitter.com (not that Twitter it doesn’t require work still).

So, now that the word is out, go download the app and see what you make of it. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 4.2 or later.
