The public has become accustomed to Katy Perry and her immensely colorful, almost child-like sense of style, which is often described as a very unique combination of retro meets kitsch. Yet, it is precisely this original sense of style that the latest issue of Complex magazine is trying to eradicate, while revealing to the world a Katy Perry like we have never seen before, dark and edgy and definitely more confident.

“Dark Angel” Katy, as the spread has been titled, is meant to show that “pop is more than just cherries and bubble gum,” as Complex puts it. In all fairness, as far as image is concerned, a single look at the edgy pictures, some of them showing the singer in the type of outfit that fans perhaps never believed they would see, proves the spread does that down to a point. It was a tough mission to accomplish, Katy explains, as she’s not used to this type of clothes or heels but, above all, to this kind of in-your-face attitude, but now that she looks back on it, she’s more than happy she agreed to do it.

The thing about Katie Perry, in her own words, that people often misunderstand is that she’s more of a free spirit than a rebel. She does not like to live her life the rock’n’roll manner, burning the candle at both ends. Since this is her second attempt at fame, she knows it can all go away come tomorrow, which is why she works so hard to make sure her star does not fade even before getting the chance to shine properly. This is also why she has plenty of respect for other stars as well, be they newcomers or not, as long as she doesn’t feel like they’re selling out.

“[Gossip blogger]Perez knows that I like to keep it all about the music, he knows my grind is hard and I work every single day and nothing is for free – I’m not just some [expletive] idiot, wasted pop starlet that’s lost on an island somewhere. […] I have a job, I know my responsibility and I’m always trying to take it to the next level, and whether it’s Perez or anyone else, you kind of have to respect that – and I do respect tons of other new artists. People had a bet on my head that I’d have to dip out because I wouldn’t be able to handle all of it. I went and played every show and then I sold out a 50-city, around-the-world tour, which is awesome, and most of these [expletive] just hawk breath mints or shoes. No offense to them; maybe I’ll hawk shoes later in life.” Katie says of why people should at least give her the benefit of the doubt.

Granted, this is not the first time that the star speaks about how hard it was for her to achieve the kind of fame she’s enjoying now. Katie Perry has often said that she’s not to be mistaken with the Britneys and Parises of pop music because she, unlike them, invests a lot of soul into what she’s doing, while also working extremely hard to make sure it doesn’t all slip through her fingers.
