Latest rumors from the Katy Perry and John Mayer camp come to contradict everything that's been said about them in the last couple of days. The only part that seems to be true is the fact that the two musicians have indeed decided to go their separate ways.

But whereas previous reports claimed that it was a messy affair, with screaming, guilt placing and probably even crying, today insiders quoted by Us Magazine are saying the split was reached as a mutual understanding and that parties have remained friends.

The words used by the insider to describe the breakup were “mutual” and “extremely amicable,” pointing out that Perry and Mayer remain the best of friends and bear each other no grudges. But more importantly, the source also reveals the reason of this unexpected breakup.

Predictably, it was Katy's hectic schedule that finally drove a wedge between the two singers who had split up and reconciled before. According to the insider, both of them realized that they were having issues and “made the mature decision that it was the right time” to split up.

To those that don't know, Katy Perry and John Mayer have been dating on and off since the summer of 2012, but this time everyone thought it was getting serious. Katy was gushing all over the media about her new man, telling people just how in love she was and how smart and complex he was.

Around Valentine's Day they even sparked engagement rumors, as Katy was spotted flaunting a new ring on her wedding finger, nonchalantly waving it about as they were exiting a restaurant in Los Angeles.

We're not even going to mention their infamous musical duet “Who You Love” which is featured on Mayer's album and which also benefited from a rather cheesy video in which the couple affectionately rode a mechanical bull in slow motion as a love-bonding experience.

When they premiered the clip on “Good Morning America,” the two held hands and seemed very much in love, as they mouthed the lyrics of their new ballad.

But all of this came to a crashing halt just yesterday, when the first rumors of their split emerged, saying that they had actually broken up several days ago. The media was dumbfounded as there was no previous sign their relationship was headed in that direction, it was quite the opposite.

This could very well be the last time Perry and Mayer get together, which means that the “Roar” singer is going to be single and available once more. She'll have all the time in the world to focus on her newest tour “Prism.”
