Katy Perry says Russell Brand has taught her to love herself even when she’s not wearing makeup

Just the other day, Katy Perry was causing quite a stir in the media as quotes from her interview with the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine started to emerge online. The fact that she posed for the magazine in very little clothes also contributed a bit to the media frenzy, to be fair. Today, as MTV’s HollywoodCrush points out, Katy appears to be just a normal girl with normal problems.

The singer is also featured on the back-to-school issue of Seventeen, on the cover of which she’s rocking a very cool pink outfit and her best angelic face. Undeniably, Perry is a very gorgeous woman – or, at least, that’s how the fans and the media see her. Opening up to the mag about her insecurities and her acne problems (of which much has already been said, so there’s no use repeating it all), Katy says it wasn’t until she met fiancé Russell Brand that she got to love herself.

He was the one that taught her to love and appreciate herself for what she was and to stop drawing parallels with others. Until she met him, Katy was reportedly so ashamed of how she looked she wouldn’t even go to bed without her makeup on, which only made matters worse in the morning when she woke up. After becoming involved with Brand, she found out that appearances are not everything – and, most importantly, that they can be very deceiving.

“I think he taught me a lot about inner beauty and confidence in myself. I don’t really feel pretty ever, without makeup. I feel ugly. And so I would have to sleep with makeup on, or feel ugly and gross. He looks beyond all of that, which is such a win, because I’ve never felt that with anybody. He’s in love with the person inside of me, and the outside of me is just a bonus,” Katy says of how the British comedian helped her overcome the insecurity she had about her appearance.

Of course, Russell did more than that, Katy shares in the same interview. “[He] changed my mind about him the moment I met him. I said, ‘You are a better person than how you are portrayed.’ He’s a very spiritual person. And I’m constantly struggling with the idea of being spiritual and material,” the singer explains.
