In an event that took place Tuesday night in New York City, the 29-year-old pop singer has been named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador with a special mission that focuses on children and adolescents who are most vulnerable, due to severe poverty, violence, abuse and neglect, E! News

reports.

Naturally, this new status has had a big effect on the “Unconditionally” singer who's had some prior experience with humanitarian work back in April, when she took some time from her schedule to pay a visit to poverty-stricken youth in Madagascar.

It was then that she met many underprivileged children who had been the victims of abuse and abandonment.

It was this trip that inspired her to write the song “Unconditionally” on her newest album “Prism,” which she confesses is her favorite.

She's also contributed with her hit song “Roar” to the soundtrack of the PSA aimed at girls as part of UNICEF's second annual International Day of the Girl Child. The song was chosen because it was meant to inspire girls to become tomorrow's champions.

This time around, Katy seems to be humbled by her new status, of which she says has led her to become more grounded and more responsible, popping the balloon dream world she had been living in.

As newly appointed Goodwill Ambassador, Katy expects she will have to take one trip a year for UNICEF and among the most discussed possible destinations are Peru, Haiti and the Philippines.

On a lighter note, Perry is also hoping that her hit song “Roar” will be nominated for the upcoming Grammys, nominations which will be announced on Friday, and even take home a prize.

"Well first comes the speculation, then the nomination and then hopefully an award," she is quoted as saying. "So I think I would be too premature. I'm just happy that 'Roar' has kind of taken on a life of its own and touched so many people in a way unexpectedly that I could have ever imagined."
