Katy Perry uses her fame to make a public service announcement and you better brace yourself for this, because it's going to shatter your conception on social media and what exactly you can and can't do on there.

The “Dark Horse” singer recently took to her Twitter to blast selfies as an evil thing, by calling them a disease “Dear festival friends remember, selfing is a disease,” she wrote her over 50 million fans, referring to the Coachella Festival, a celebration that is known for the impressive numbers of photos being made and then uploaded by attendees on social media.

Perry was reportedly attending a Harper Bazaar's private pool party at Coachella at the time when she tweeted her opinion on the matter. She was most than likely amazed at the number of people selfing themselves in photos around her.

Reports indicate that Katy was approached by a fan who asked her to take a selfie of herself but she denied. She then proceeded to explain to the female fan why she doesn't indulge in selfies but later relented when the fan agreed to join her in the photo as well.

This comes days after the White House announced it was looking at banning selfies with the President when it was revealed that a such a photo of Obama was used to promote Samsung phones.

Also, experts are now claiming that selfies cause addiction and also mental illness due to their narcissistic nature. So Perry might be on to something there, but it's still not enough to eradicate the phenomenon.

It's gotten to a point that selfies caused Instagram to crash right at the time Coachella was in full swing, leading people to believe that people in attendance were taking so many selfies that they managed to overload the site.

Looking back at the last couple of months, we can report that it was also a selfie that crashed Twitter back at the beginning of the year, when Ellen DeGeneres decided to share a star-studded photo of the most famous people in the room at the 2014 Oscars. Later, it came to light that the move was also a Samsung promotional campaign that people unwittingly participate in, so it makes you wonder about how people's obsessions are changing the ways that big corporations are promoting their products.

So, for this one, we have to be on board with Katy Perry, selfies really have evolved into a disease.
