Actress draws comparisons to Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”

Katie Holmes was one of the celebrity guests at this year’s MET Gala 2014, which took place on Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and celebrated the opening of the Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibit, but because of her yellow mustard Marchesa, she ended up on most worst dressed lists.

The MET Ball is the highlight of the year for the fashion industry, which is explains why it has a good celebrity turnout with each edition. The most recent was no exception and, though many celebrities made a spectacular presence on the red carpet, Katie wasn’t among them.

She wore a crumpled, oversized, off the shoulder Marchesa gown in yellow mustard, with brown embroidery on the waistline. Though the idea of this combination probably sounded good in theory, in practice, it led to several scatological jokes making the rounds online.

Obviously, we won’t be reproducing them here, so suffice it to say they were nasty.

At best, Katie’s dress drew comparisons to Belle in the Disney cartoon “Beauty and the Beast,” which you probably don’t consider a bad thing. However, the theme of the night was old-school glamor and there is none of that in Belle’s yellow dress – or Katie’s, for that matter.

She paired it with Harry Winston earrings and ring, and had her hair styled in a messy half-updo that flattered her face and created the impression of an asymmetrical bob. The actress also ditched the bangs she’d been sporting for a few weeks now and which many pundits consider a bad idea because they seem to age her.

On the bright side, Katie seemed to be enjoying herself, both at the event and in her dress. She smiled brightly for pictures and probably had a blast inside, so this is probably her consolation prize for making it on the worst dressed list.

Considering that Katie’s pre-divorce red carpet appearances usually meant she would scowl at photographers, fans are thrilled to see her beaming with joy, even in something deemed “monstrous,” as the case with this particular gown is.

At least Katie is in good company on the worst dressed list, because Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Sports Illustrated stunner Kate Upton have also been included on it for their interpretation of an outfit oozing old-school glamor.

Lupita wore a Prada gown that drew comparisons to a dreamcatcher (in neon green), while Kate Upton channeled her inner saloon girl in a ruffled and very confusing Dolce & Gabbanna dress.
