14 DAY TRIAL // Katharine McPhee, who rose to fame on American Idol and is now a well-known singer and actress, has filed for divorce from her husband of 6 years, Nick Cokas. The filing is preceded by a huge cheating scandal in which she was involved, as well as a reconciliation attempt.
McPhee usually manages to fly under the radar as far as her personal life is concerned, which means that hearing that she was cheating on her husband – with a married man, no less – caused quite an uproar in the media some months ago.
The man in question was Michael Morris, the director of “Smash,” in which she stars. The two were photographed kissing passionately on several occasions, which fueled talk of a long-standing affair. Meanwhile, their respective partners were said to be completely in the dark about the clandestine relationship.
Some weeks after Katharine and Michael were “busted” and exposed in the tabloids, she was photographed with Nick, holding hands and looking one hundred percent a happy couple as before. It is believed that they tried to make the marriage work one more time, despite the cheating.
That changed when she decided to file the divorce papers.
“After six years of marriage, and having been separated for the past year, [Katharine] has filed for a dissolution of marriage from Nick Cokas. The two have an amicable relationship and will remain friends,” a rep for the star says in a statement to TMZ.
That last part is very surprising considering all of the above, i.e. the cheating, the getting caught, and the public humiliation. Word online has it that Nick considered Katharine’s cheating on him and the way in which she got caught a very humiliating experience, from which he could barely recover to consider taking her back.
The same celebrity publication says that, while the singer was determined to do her best to make the marriage work again, she ultimately “decided she just didn’t want to be married anymore,” which is why she filed the divorce papers.
Katharine married Nick when she was just 23 (he was 42 years old at the time) on February 2, 2008 at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. This was her first marriage. They have no children together.
Seeing how most celebrities sign iron-clad prenups before tying the knot, it’s probably safe to assume Katharine did so too, so her divorce from Nick shouldn’t pose any problems in this sense.
