For “Revolutionary Road”

She’s a gorgeous actress whose performances have not once failed to touch the hearts of critics and audiences alike. She’s also a dedicated thespian who would not play but by her own rules, to truly admirable results. However, Kate Winslet is also, as per her own admission as well, a woman who never seems to win anything. This came to change last night, as she picked up two Golden Globes at the 2009 edition.

First, Kate took home the Best Actress award for her part in “Revolutionary Road,” and gave an acceptance speech that will probably be remembered as the most heartfelt, unscripted and off the wall in the history of the awards ceremony. That same night, Winslet picked up yet another accolade, for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for her part in “The Reader.”

“You have to forgive me!” Kate began by telling the audience, upon getting up on stage to take her Best Actress award. She then proceeded by forgetting the name of Angelina Jolie, the fifth contender in the same category, an oversight she immediately corrected and that was wiped away with a smile by Angelina, given the highly agitated state in which Kate was.

“I’m so sorry Anne [Hathaway], Meryl [Streep], Kristin [Scott Thomas] – oh God, who’s the other one?” Kate said, struggling to pull herself together. Nevertheless, in the end, she managed to “gather,” as she kept repeating to herself, and to make a really touching acceptance speech. It included thanks to everyone on the team of “Revolutionary Road,” her first film with Leonardo DiCaprio since “Titanic,” to her agents and many other people from behind the scenes.

The speech concluded with an equally heartfelt thanks to her co-star Leonardo, of whom she said she had and would continue to love for as long as she lived, her husband Sam Mendes, and also the director of “Revolutionary Road,” and her children.

The Golden Globes are watched annually by millions of visitors, being held as the clearest indicator of what we’re to expect from the Academy Awards. Whether Kate Winslet will get to take home an Oscar for Best Actress remains to be seen. In the meanwhile, below is a video of her acceptance speech at last night’s awards ceremony.
