Kate Beckinsale, star of “Underworld” and “Underworld: Evolution,” left the franchise when she decided to pursue more serious roles and break free of her image as the leather-clad vampire that got male fans’ hearts racing the moment she appeared on screen. Now, she is ready to return to “Underworld” – in 3D nonetheless –, BloodyDisgusting reports.

This is just a rumor as of now, but even the fact that word is out there that Beckinsale is considering taking on Selene again and donning the tight outfit is enough to give diehard fans hope. As they say, there is never smoke without a fire so chances that she has actually been approached to do the fourth “Underworld” film are actually pretty high – but not the same can be said about her actually accepting the offer, the horror movie e-zine says. This is why it would be advisable that fans waited for official confirmation on this, but that’s not to say they still can’t rejoice at the thought.

“After the news broke that Sony Screen Gems was kicking off a brand new ‘Underworld’ trilogy with Underworld 4 (also said to be shot in 3-D), we started doing some digging and have stumbled on to a pretty big discovery. Two sources have told Bloody Disgusting that Kate Beckinsale is in fact attached to return as the beautiful vampire warrior Selene, who made her first appearance in Len Wiseman’s film from 2003. […] We have not been able to get any official confirmation from people involved in the actual film, or studio for that matter.” BloodyDisgusting writes.

“Underworld 4,” although yet in the early development stages, has already been scheduled for release for January 21, 2011. It is not yet known whether it will also take place before the first and second installment, like “Rise of the Lycans” did, or whether it will go forward in time, into the future, as Wiseman said he would like to do earlier this year. Whichever this goes, if Kate Beckinsale is in it, fans seem to be ok with the idea, one might say.

While “Underworld” and “Evolution” were very successful at the box-office, representing a new take on the classic vampire story, “Rise of the Lycans” somewhat failed to get the reaction Wiseman and everyone else involved in the project would have wanted. One of the reasons for that was believed to have been Beckinsale’s absence.
