Kaspersky Lab officials have confirmed the antivirus produced by the company contains a heap overflow type flaw and that its exploitation would allow a hacker to take control of a system running Microsoft Windows.

The flaw was discovered at the end of September by Alex Wheeler, a researcher who also reported bugs in other major security products.

Kaspersky Lab was immediately informed by Wheeler, and immediately started taking all the necessary measures to prevent exploits. As a result, a patch aimed at solving the problem will be issued this week.

The company officials said that the following products are affected by this problem: Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0; Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro 5.0; Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations; Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows File Servers si Kaspersky Personal Security Suite 1.1.

The official press release issued by Kaspersky Lab also says there hasn't been any exploit yet to take advantage of this flaw.
