She’s too “sophisticated” to promote cat food, by the way

Karl Lagerfeld, famed Chanel designer, famed photographer, filmmaker, and icon, is very vocal in his likes and dislikes. He is also quite unabashed about his opinions, even at those times when he must know for a fact they’re unpopular.

As of late 2011, Karl Lagerfeld is a “daddy,” having adopted a white kitten named Choupette after one of his model friends left her in his care while he was away, and she apparently refused to go back to him. Choupette is now the richest pussy in the world.

Choupette is a “miracle story,” rich, sophisticated

Choupette isn’t your average pet cat or even pet dog. Not only does she have a private jet all on her own to travel the world and join her daddy wherever his work may take him, but she also has 2 maids working for her around the clock.

She has products with her face on it, a Wikipedia page, social media accounts and has been featured in magazines, both for animals and humans. She is a star and she’s treated like one: she has people who do her “hair” and apply expensive eye treatments, she doesn’t like children (adults either) or to cuddle, and she only does what she wants.

According to Karl, hers is a “miracle story.” Choupette also happens to be filthy rich.

“Choupette became the most famous cat in the world, and the richest. She did two jobs and made 3 million euros [$3.2 million] last year,” Lagerfeld tells the New York Magazine. “One was for cars in Germany and the other was for a Japanese beauty product. I don’t allow her to do foodstuffs and things like this. She’s too sophisticated for that. She had something unique. She is like a human being, but the good thing is that she’s silent.”

That’s right, Choupette the cat is too sophisticated to sell your cat food, humans. She is like Greta Garbo (Lagerfeld’s words, not ours), but with better hair and without the ability to speak.

Choupette made Karl Lagerfeld “less selfish”

Again, if you know nothing of Karl Lagerfeld’s life, we’ll stress that he’s exactly the type of guy he seems at first sight: he speaks his mind and doesn’t care if he offends, he has no respect or consideration for “peasants,” and is admittedly lost in a world of notions of beauty and fashion that can hardly be encountered in real life.

Karl Lagerfeld has been compared to a mad genius, but many prefer to think of him as just “mad” - or crazy, in plainspeak.

He will probably not deny it if you told him so to his face, but he insists that he’s a better man these days for having Choupette in his life. He admits that he doesn’t take care of her at all (that’s what the maids are for!), but she’s made him less selfish.

However, he is positive he wouldn’t have given her the time of day had she not been as unique as she is. “It’s only great because of the uniqueness of her,” he says.
