10 civilians have died in an attack in the southern province of Kandahar in Afghanistan, next to the southern border with Pakistan.

The women and children died in an attack on their minibus, as the vehicle was traveling from Zharay district to Khakrez district.

The Examiner mentions that the attack took place on Tuesday, July 9. The bar was hit by suicide bombers upon its entry into a police compound.

Kandahar is Taliban territory, and, while they have claimed responsibility for other attacks on US troops, they have remained quiet about the incident.

“Many foreign and Afghan troops have been killed,” Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said upon claiming an attack on six US soldiers before the Kandahar bombing, as relayed by Russia Today.

According to provincial government spokesman Jawid Faisal, eight women and two children have lost their lives in the explosion. They were all pronounced dead on the spot on Tuesday morning.

“The ill-fated minibus was traveling from Zharay district to neighboring Khakrez. The bus touched off the bomb placed along the road in Khakrez district. The explosion killed eight women and two children on the spot at about 8:00 a.m. local time,” Faisal tells Xinhua.

UPI writes that 2,000 civilians have been injured or killed in Afghanistan this year alone.

Yesterday, we reported about 42 civilians being killed by an Islamic group in Yobe state, Nigeria. 29 children died when the Boko Haram opened fire and threw explosives at a Yobe elementary school.

The kids and teachers were locked inside a dormitory and explosives were thrown at the building. Students that tried to escape were gunned down.

“The killing is barbaric, completely wicked. Anybody who will target innocent children for any kind of grief will certainly go to hell,” president Goodluck Jonathan said in a statement.
