The latest update to the KDE SC has been released. KDE SC 4.5.3 is a minor update, focusing on bug fixes and stability issues. This release includes improvements to the shared data cache and updates to Okular, the default document viewer in KDE, and to the Dolphin file manager.

"KDE has released a series of updates to the Plasma Desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Platform. This update is the third in a series of monthly stabilization updates to the 4.5 series," the official announcement read.

"As the release only contains bugfixes and translation updates, it will be a safe and pleasant update for everyone. KDE SC 4 is already translated into more than 55 languages, with more to come," it added.

Highlights of KDE SC 4.5.3:

· KSharedDataCache has cache invalidation bug fixed that caused stability issues when daylight saving time changed; · Icon overlays in Dolphin are now positioned correctly after adjusting the zoom level; · Okular, KDE's universal document viewer has seen improvements in the DjVu and XPS backends;

The next bug-fixing update, KDE SC 4.5.4, is expected to land at the end of the month, on November 30. The next major release, KDE SC 4.6, is not expected until next year and is scheduled for release on January 26, 2011.

The KDE team says that updates to the KDE SC 4.5.x line should be slowing down as the focus is shifted towards the upcoming KDE SC 4.6.

KDE SC 4.5.3 continues to fix some of the remaining issues in KDE SC 4.5 and in the subsequent 4.5.1 and 4.5.2. You can find a short tutorial on how to update to the latest KDE SC release in Ubuntu here.
