Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has announced today that its TrueTouch touchscreen solution has been used for the implementation of the new waterproof touchscreen that comes with the KDDI Sportio water beat mobile phone. The handset has been manufactured by Sharp and sports a 3-inch touchscreen, as well as a water resistive feature that is similar to IPX5/7.

The new Sportio water beat device is aimed mainly at active users and comes to the market with a small size and less weight. It can prove to be a great option for fitness, golf and other outdoor activities, and it sports both a GPS and an accelerometer. At the same time, the device also brings a wide range of entertainment features, including audio player, one-segment digital TV, and a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper.

“The Sportio water beat is an amazing product and we are happy to see TrueTouch technology contribute to its rich feature set. Our waterproof technology is one of many features that set TrueTouch apart from competitive offerings,” said Norm Taffe, executive vice president of Cypress’s Consumer and Computation Division. Hitoshi Yoshizawa, Japan country manager for Cypress, added: “The unmatched flexibility and performance of TrueTouch along with our excellent local technical support staff offer customers the best choice for implementing touchscreens.”

Cypress’s TrueTouch series has been built upon the PSoC programmable system-on-chip architecture, and comes with single-touch, multi-touch and “multi-touch all-point” solutions. According to the company, the multi-touch all-point offering is able to deliver support for up to 10 touches at the same time, something that competing solutions failed to achieve until now. Moreover, it can also deliver the best water rejection in the industry, and the new Sportio water beat phone proves it.

Cypress also states that its TrueTouch solution can offer increased flexibility, but more details on it can be found on the company's site.
