Video game developer 2K Sports and publisher Take Two have announced that Justin Verlander, who is currently the pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, has been named the athlete who will grace the cover of the upcoming Major League Baseball 2K12.

Justin Verlander stated, “It's a dream come true to be on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K12. I've worked closely with 2K Sports on the MLB 2K series since 2007, and I couldn't be more excited to continue my relationship with such a great baseball game.”

Jason Argent, who is the vice president of marketing for 2K Sports, added, “Justin's amazing performance this season speaks for itself. Between his second career no-hitter and leading the league in virtually every pitching category, I can't think of anyone else but Justin Verlander to serve as the face of Major League Baseball 2K12.”

The announcement was made just after Verlander was selected by his fellow players as the recipient of the Players Choice Award for Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Pitcher.

Verlander is one of the most solid pitchers in baseball at the moment, the thirteenth one to throw multiple no-hit games in one season and the first player of the Detroit Tigers who managed to win 20 games since 1991.

Verlander is also one of the favorites for the American League Cy Young Award for the 2011 season and could also become the first pitcher since 1992 to get the MVP Award for the competition.

The new Major League Baseball video game will be launched during the month of March 2012, with the platforms set to be the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, the PC, the PS2, the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo Wii.

The game will include a series of improvements to both the mechanics, the rosters and the way the video game looks.
