New ruling: Prop 8 is unconstitutional, California allows same-gender marriage again

Equality has scored a major win only a few hours ago, when Judge Vaughn Walker declared Proposition 8, the controversial measure meant to ban same-gender marriage, unconstitutional. Not only does the measure single out individuals from the LGBT community and denies them the right to marriage, but it also paves the way for direct discrimination, Judge Walker ruled, E! Online informs.

The first step towards marriage equality has been made with this historical ruling. Even though the matter will most likely go to the US Supreme Court, the ruling stands as the first literal step in the right direction, banishing discrimination based on orientation along the way, it is being said. The celebrity world, both straight and gay stars, has reacted with great joy to the news, taking to Twitter to spread the happy news and speak out.

The ruling “affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves,” California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says. “This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time! It’s about time. I am thrilled that California finally took a step in the right direction!” Kim Kardashian gushes to E! LGBT activist Cyndi Lauper says the ruling “is a testament to the fundamentals on which this great country was built and validates that the discrimination gay couples face must come to an end... This decision is a major step in the right direction towards equality.” And these are just three examples of celebrities speaking out on the ruling.

Paris Hilton tweets, “What a huge historical day for equal rights in this country! They finally overturned Prop 8! There shouldn’t be a law on true love. :)” Christina Applegate, now pregnant with her first child, also used Twitter to express her joy, writing, “I am crying with absolute joy! Thank you thank you thank you for letting equality win. All men are created equal! Period!!!” Eli Roth shares the sentiment, but also finds time to crack a joke about the entire thing, tweeting, “Amazing news about Prop8 being overturned. Now The Sun can make up engagement stories about everyone!”

Kal Penn, Katy Perry, Kelly Osbourne, Olivia Munn, Samantha Ronson, Ricky Martin and Kelly Osbourne are just some of the other celebrities being vocal about their joy that Prop 8 has been overturned. Adam Lambert, said to be the only male artist to go mainstream after coming out, also praised the decision and concluded in his trademark style, saying it was time to “throw glitter on this barn!”
