While the “Batman” villain debate rages on online, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is looking to expand his work by doing a tongue-in-cheek zombie comedy called “Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament,” with Scarlett Johansson.

Ever since he starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio is Chris Nolan’s highly successful “Inception,” Joseph’s name has been on everyone’s lips – and judging by how much money the movie made and how wonderfully it was received, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Now, the indie actor is looking to expand his horizons with a horror comedy that MTV’s Hollywood Crush describes as a saucy mix of “District 9”meets “Shaun of the Dead” meets “Fight Club” meets “Wristcutters: A Love Story.”

Though at this point in time, Gordon-Levitt is only attached to the project as the male lead, fans can’t but hope he will eventually get the part.

Having Scarlett Johansson as onscreen partner, sharing the joys and troubles of the life of the undead is yet another thing that’s getting fans talking on dedicated forums.

Critically acclaimed screenwriter Diablo Cody would produce the romantic zombie comedy, which will also have some light political undertones, based on a script by Geoff Latulippe (“Going the Distance”).

“Meet Andy Warner, a recently deceased everyman and newly minted zombie. Resented by his parents, abandoned by his friends, and reviled by a society that no longer considers him human, Andy is having a bit of trouble adjusting to his new existence,” reads the synopsis of the film.

“But all that changes when he goes to an Undead Anonymous meeting and finds kindred souls in Rita, an impossibly [gorgeous] recent suicide with a taste for the formaldehyde in cosmetic products, and Jerry, a twenty-one-year-old car crash victim with an exposed brain.”

“When the group meets a rogue zombie who teaches them the joys of human flesh, things start to get messy, and Andy embarks on a journey of self-discovery that will take him from his casket, to the SPCA, to a media-driven class-action lawsuit on behalf of the rights of zombies everywhere,” the synopsis further says.

In other words, “Breathers” should be “Zombieland” from the zombie’s perspective, with a touch of Scarlett Johansson on the side.

While reports say that negotiations are currently underway to lock Joseph and Scarlett in their contracts, even if this zombie rom-com doesn’t happen, fans may still have a chance to catch him on the big screen in a popular project, namely the upcoming “Batman” film.

As we also reported a while back, word in the blogosphere has it Nolan is thinking of making The Riddler the main villain of the upcoming “Batman” film, having already approached Gordon-Levitt with an offer for it.
