Finnish company Jolla has just announced that it has removed the “beta” tag from the Sailfish operating system that powers its smartphones.

With the release of Sailfish OS 1.0, Jolla smartphones are ready for global distribution. Moreover, the stable version of the operating system will also be made available for download to Android users.

“We’re very excited to announce this. We’ve been working hard together with our user community to make the user experience of the Jolla smartphone and Sailfish OS effortless and distinct.

We believe that Jolla now offers a truly viable option for all smartphone users. Naturally we are not stopping here, as we continue to provide monthly software updates to Jolla devices and Sailfish OS,” says Marc Dillon, co-founder and COO of Jolla.

According to Jolla, the next major update for Sailfish OS will be released in March. In addition, the company has also promised that it will make available the launcher and full OS image for everyone to download.

Furthermore, the Android application compatibility has been improved, so Jolla smartphone users will now be able to install their preferred Android app store and choose from hundreds of thousands of applications.

“In addition, the active and passionate Sailfish OS community has already developed major social media applications, such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, and Foursquare, natively to the Sailfish OS,” added Marc Dillon.

In the same piece of news, Jolla has announced that it will extend the sales of its smartphones to additional countries very soon. The company has confirmed that Jolla smartphones will soon be available for purchase in all countries in the European Union, as well as Norway and Switzerland.

In addition, Jolla plans to add India, Hong Kong and Russia to the list of markets where its smartphones will be available for purchase.

Last but not least, Jolla has announced a few partnerships with major companies, such as Rovio, F-Secure and Tieto Corporation.
