On Monday, phone maker startup Jolla officially announced the availability of a new platform release for the owners of its Sailfish OS-based Jolla smartphones, namely version 1.0.7.16, Saapunki.

The new OS upgrade, which the company calls the early-June update, arrives on devices with a nice range of enhancements and new features, and should deliver an appealing new experience to all users.

The OS upgrade comes with 4G support for all users, though a 4G SIM is required for the feature to work. To enable it, users should head over to Settings > System > Mobile network > Network mode = Prefer 4G.

Additionally, the update brings Facebook notifications sub-page in events view, where you can like and comment, as well as folder support in app launcher area. Moreover, Jolla users will enjoy two-way synchronization of Google contacts following the update.

Other changes in the OS upgrade include new accounts for popular calDAV providers: Yahoo!, MemoToo, Fruux, ownCloud (experimental), along with support for uploading files in Browser (experimental).

At the same time, the platform refresh brings HTML5 Fullscreen support in Browser, while also making it easier to switch between tabs in the browser, as it will remember user’s last position and will no longer reload the tab content.

Following the update, users will also be able to personalize shortcuts on lock screen pull-down menu via Settings > System > Shortcuts > Lock Screen, and will enjoy support for additional Bluetooth profiles: PBAP (phone book) and HID (input devices).

Support for traditional and simplified Chinese Handwriting Recognition in virtual keyboard has also been included in the update, along with new settings for the browser [Settings > Apps > Browser > Privacy], such as clear private data, and "Do not track" option.

The OS also sports quick-scrolling feature enabled in Sailfish views now, along with fast access to SailfishOS updates [Settings >System >Sailfish OS updates], with a new options for performing manual checks: Manual / WLAN only / Always.

According to the release notes, the new OS flavor also comes with SIM Application Toolkit support, which means that SIM and network-specific add-on services from carriers are now supported.

On top of that, Jolla notes that the update also brings along ICASA certification (South Africa) for its handset, which can be seen under Settings > About product.

The new platform release will arrive on devices with "The First one" covers in the beginning, but will be pushed to the rest of them too, soon after. To update, users should make sure that a working Jolla account is present on the device, the charger is plugged, and that the handset is connected to the web.
