Within Second Life, fans created two U2 gigs

Have you ever thought about attending a virtual online concert of your favorite band? Don't spend another minute dreaming about it, as this will soon become reality.

Four dedicated U2 fans have made a habit out of impersonating their idols within the massive multiplayer online world of Second Life. They have created characters with a likeness to the band members: Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton. Moreover, within this seemingly limitless world, they started "U2 in SL"; a small yet dedicated community of role players. Together they staged not one, but two virtual U2 concerts thus far, using only a live recording of the band's music. Lights, effects, stage movement, a wild crowd and the instruments were all handled by the game's engine and the players' ability to act in-character.

Although the last gig was attended by only ten fans, the idea is most impressive as it is only a matter of time until more and more people will see its potential. They do this for fun and most importantly, to raise social awareness on the various causes supported by the band in real world, charitable organizations such as One.org, Data.org, Africanwellfund.org and Makepovertyhistory.org. There is no money to be made from this endeavor yet the satisfaction of being one of the first virtual bands to exist in a virtual world is enough.

Second Life is a 3D real world simulator entirely built and owned by its residents. It has grown extensively since its opening to the public in 2003 and today is inhabited by over 300 000 people from all around the globe; a three dimensional social club where you can make friends and model your environment at your leisure.
