Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, once considered the handsomest couple in showbiz, had been merely keeping appearances these past couple of years, says a new report.

Their romance was basically over in 2010, when their fights became “blazing” and only served to augment resentment on both sides.

Us Weekly writes in its latest issue, the online version, that problems started when Vanessa began to resent Johnny for his successful movie career – the same one that she'd helped him build and boost.

At the same time, she believed she had sacrificed more for the relationship to work: she'd put her work second so that he could have the successful career that he has now.

“Paradis eventually began to resent Depp's success – even though his $20 [€16] million-a-movie salary paid for their lavish lifestyle. And with her singing going nowhere, 'Vanessa started to feel like she'd sacrificed her career for his,' a friend recently explained to Us Weekly,” the publication writes.

She began nagging him day in, day out, and he turned to drinking and other women to forget about the frustrations at home.

“The constant bickering led to vicious spats. 'They'd have blazing fights,' says the friend. 'Vanessa would take her frustrations out on him.' Depp, in turn, 'started to drink heavily',” the publication writes.

By 2010, they were over but they decided to keep up appearances so that their children wouldn't be hurt.

“It broke Johnny's heart that the family he loves so much was becoming fractured,” the spy says.

“Johnny was heartbroken. But they agreed the kids' lives shouldn't be affected. That's why they didn't announce it,” the insider adds.

This is not the first time that Us runs with this story of a heartbroken Johnny turning to booze and other women, as we also noted in an older piece.

Whether there's any truth to these reports we will never know. The fact remains that the two were an item for almost 14 years and are no more.

Johnny and Vanessa have two children together, Lily Rose (13) and Jack (10).
