With “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” not even out in theaters, there’s plenty of talk about a possible fifth and even sixth movie. Referring to reports that the future of the franchise depended entirely on him, Johnny Depp says he’s on board for more.

In November 2009, Depp signed on for the fourth film in the franchise, even though Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom passed on the offer.

Depp reportedly got a whopping $38 million for just one film, with Disney telling him they’d decide what to do next if this one was well received by the public.

Disney’s confidence in “Pirates” has received a boost even before the release – so much so that Jerry Bruckheimer said just recently that there would be more installments if Depp was ok with them.

As it turns out, he is: now in Cannes to promote the film, the actor told reporters that Cpt. Jack Sparrow would be around for as long as audiences wanted him, PopEater reports.

“If the people get tired of it or something, that’s when it stops, I think. If people want it, I’m there,” Depp explained.

In other words, as long as the “Pirates” made enough money to convince Disney it was a franchise worth keeping and investing into, Depp would reprise the same part over and over again.

Newcomer to the franchise Penelope Cruz is also at the Cannes Film Festival doing promotional work for the film, but, oddly enough, she’s not saying anything about the possibility of reprising her role for a new installment.

She did say, though, that she did not feel the same pressure as other women to hold on to her youthful look by doing extreme things to her face.

“I think birthdays are always something to celebrate,” she said, as cited by the aforementioned e-zine.

“I’m looking forward to every step of the way. Maybe because I’m from Spain, that’s looked at in a different way there than, for example, in a place like Los Angeles,” she added.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is out in US theaters and in other territories on May 20, 2011.
