Fresh off the little “spat” with Australian authorities over his bringing his 2 pet pooches into the country without declaring them to authorities, Johnny Depp is back in the country to work on the 2017 release “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” He’s also been working on a little surprise for his fans, which comes as an unexpected collaboration with Dior.

Making his debut as an endorsement guy, Depp has finally agreed to put his famous name and equally famous face to front a certain product. And Dior is thrilled about it.

New fragrance debuts in September

Attached to this article is the first photo of Depp for the upcoming Dior campaign. For the time being, nothing is known of the new fragrance, save that it will be composed by Francoid Demarchy.

In the press statement released by the company (see below), no details on the perfume are included, as the text focuses mostly on what an amazing and versatile actor he is. His performances stand as proof for that, and Dior promises that with this new campaign, he will be unveiling a new side to his personality.

Not even the first promotional photo offers any indication as to what we should expect from the partnership, unless you count the fact that Depp seems visibly displeased with something as a hint.

Surprise partnership prompts online mockery

Johnny Depp may still be a crowd favorite, but he’s long fallen out of the grace of the critics. Once one of the most esteemed actors because he would only do projects he cared deeply about, he’s now seen as somewhat of a sell-out since he accepted the deal with Disney for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

However, it was the poor box office performance of his most recent films (starting with “The Rum Diary” onwards) that set critics against him, mostly because he seems determined to stick to just one role that he plays over and over again.

As of now, Depp can still command a $20 million (€17.6 million) salary, but that will probably not last for much longer if his movies don’t pick up speed at the box office, celebrity pundits believe.

In this light, his partnership with Dior isn’t so much as a step forward as it’s a desperate attempt to cling to his A-list status, voices are joking online.

Depp has “Black Mass” coming out in 2015, in which he plays the most dangerous gangster in America, Whitey Bulger. Here’s to hoping that this one will turn critics back in his favor again.
