14 DAY TRIAL // Since he became a household name and especially during his 13-year romance with Vanessa Paradis, Johnny Depp always made it a point of avoiding to get too personal in interviews that actually served to promote his work. That’s changed now that he’s engaged to Amber Heard.
The two met during the production of “The Rum Diary,” where they played lovers and, if we’re to believe reports, they had a fling back then too, even if Johnny was still with Vanessa.
In recent months, Amber was photographed by the paparazzi wearing a diamond ring on her engagement finger, with insiders saying Depp had popped the question weeks before, but they had decided they weren’t ready to go public with the news just yet.
It seems that this has changed. Just days after he joked with reports in China that he was wearing a “chick’s ring” because he was obviously engaged, Depp is also confirming the happy news for Savannah Guthrie on The Today Show.
Video of the entire interview will become available today but, for the time being, we have NBC reporting that Depp did more than that: he also gushed about Amber in a way he’s never spoken about her before.
“She's a wonderful girl. She's sharp as a tack. A southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me,” he told Savannah. Then, when she asked him if he was engaged, he first tried to laugh it off but eventually held up his hand and accepted her congratulations.
Depp is now wearing a woman’s engagement ring on his finger. It’s not uncommon for men to wear engagement rings (“mangagement” baubles, they’re called) but, in his case, this is a standard-looking diamond ring.
Rumor has it that it was actually his first choice for Amber, the ring he proposed to her with. When she slipped it on her finger, she noticed that it didn’t fit and Johnny, being the rich superstar that he is, instead of getting it resized, simply went out and bought her another – a bigger one.
NBC doesn’t say whether Depp mentions a possible wedding date in the interview, and that’s bound to keep the tabloids busy for weeks or even months to come. So far, their favorite stories were about how he’s turning into a groomzilla and it’s freaking Amber out, and how he doesn’t want to ask her to sign a prenup because she’s been telling him it’s bad luck.
