One of the co-founders of id Software has announced that he is now working on a PC-based shooter that will include a number of social aspects designed to make the universe persistent and to bring players back to experience more of it.

John Romero, who is now the chief executive officer of Loot Drop Inc., has told Eurogamer that, “Yes, I’m definitely going to be making another shooter and it will be on PC first. I don’t want to talk about the details but I already know what it is.

“I’ve already kind of designed the thing and it’s pretty cool – though of course, I am going to say that. I think it’s a neat design, I haven’t seen the design anywhere else.”

He added, “It’s a persistent game, it has persistent player data, the character grows and gets better over time. I think most gamers expect that now anyway, but this was a design I’d done a while ago. I think it’s pretty valid.”

Romero says that the game’s core mechanics are those of a shooter, played from a third-person perspective in order to give players options when it comes to movement and targeting.

At the same time, the reward system and the way the new game’s story is told appear to be closer to those seen in an MMO.

This will presumably mean that players will need to return to the Romero project repeatedly to get all the narrative elements and to develop their character.

Romero also says that he will only offer more information on his new MMO shooter when it is closer to release date so as to make sure that the meaning of his statements is not twisted to create expectations that the experience cannot meet.

John Romero was linked to the creation of Doom and Quake and he also worked on the ill-fated Daikatana.
