Star says he’s a changed man, talks about long break from music

It’s been 2 years since John Mayer was forced to go on vocal rest after doctors discovered a granuloma in his throat and just as much time since he last made headlines for his Don Juan-esque ways with the ladies.

He was “just a jerk” back then, John says in a new interview with CBS that will air this weekend, as cited by the Los Angeles Times.

Considering his history with women and the way those romances ended, he’s definitely not under-selling it.

As fans must know, Mayer dated anyone from Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston to Jennifer Love Hewitt and Taylor Swift, and he almost always came across as the bad guy because of the things he used to say in post-split interviews.

“I was just a jerk,” Mayer says.

In the CBS interview, he also talks about the media backlash that affected him even more than his inability to sing did, because he never imagined that people would turn on him like that.

He does take full responsibility for it, though.

“It's very liberating when you finally realize it's impossible to make everyone like you. I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction,” Mayer says.

Right now, Mayer is dating Katy Perry, who recently divorced British comedian Russell Brand.

Speaking with Rolling Stone magazine, John let it slip that he was “very happy,” which, as you may imagine, has already set some tongues wagging about whether another wedding was in the cards for Katy (with him, that is).

In the meantime, Brand spoke to Howard Stern about Katy’s new romance with John Mayer, saying he was a “worse or better” womanizer than himself, “depending on how you view it.”

The interview is here, if you want to hear it straight from Russell.
