Today, T-Mobile USA has got a new Chief Executive Officer, in the person of John Legere. At 54, he will become the company’s leader starting with September 22nd.

T-Mobile has had Jim Alling as its CEO since June, but he was serving in this role temporarily and will return to his position as T-Mobile’s Chief Operating Officer.

John Legere brings to T-Mobile USA his 32 years of experience in the U.S. and global telecommunications and technology industries.

He served as CEO of Global Crossing, successfully turning the company into a leading provider of IP services worldwide.

As CEO of the company, he supervised the completion of the first integrated global IP-based network in the world, delivering near-perfect network operations and offering significant improvements in user satisfaction.

“John is a talented and proven executive who brings a successful track record of leading and operating consumer- and business-focused telecommunications and technology companies,” said René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom.

“As T-Mobile moves forward with its strategic initiatives to improve its market position, including expanding its network coverage and initiating LTE service, John has obviously the right skillset to lead the business into the future.”

Obermann also noted that Legere has a great experience in the telecoms industry, and that he will help T-Mobile offer a better mobile experience to its customers. Under his command, the carrier is expected to become a stronger competitor.

“I am thrilled to join T-Mobile and lead the Company at such a pivotal time,” said Mr. Legere. “T-Mobile is taking a number of significant steps to revitalize the business and I look forward to leading our team and partners to accelerate these efforts to become a force in our industry.”

Before being CEO of Global Crossing, Legere served as the CEO of Asia Global Crossing, a Microsoft, Softbank and Global Crossing joint venture, and was Senior Vice President of Dell Computer Corporation prior to that. In the 90s, he even served in senior positions at AT&T.
