This Doctor Strange role is quickly becoming the most talked about casting rumor in Hollywood, now that all the other comic book movies have announced their cast. Yesterday, Benedict Cumberbatch denied any involvement in the project due to a scheduling conflict.

Today, we find out from the Hollywood Reporter that none other than Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to appear on screen as the magical Doctor Strange. The insider from the production process claims that the deal has now gone beyond the offer stage.

If it goes through, Joaquin will get to play on screen the role of a former neurosurgeon who, after an accident that leaves him unable to operate again, somehow gets involved with the study of magic. This will eventually lead to him becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, basically the main protector of Earth against magic attacks.

Apart from Joaquin Phoenix, the role of the good doctor, which has been on the table for some time now, has been linked to the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Jared Leto, and even Johnny Depp, who expressed his intention to play the part at one time.

So far, nothing is official, as Marvel has refused to comment on the matter, presumably because the deal has not been finalized. But it's interesting to imagine how Joaquin will play the part if and when he gets it.
