Actor promotes “Inherent Vice,” gets personal for a change

In today’s celebrity landscape, Joaquin Phoenix is what you might call a rare bird: he is immensely talented and he loves his job more than anything, but he’s terrible at being a celebrity, to the point where many of his TV interviews come across as strange.

His latest, with David Letterman, wasn’t that, even if started this way – because by the end of it, the actor revealed that the reason he was telling all these funny and strange anecdotes was because he wanted to announce his engagement to his yoga instructor.

Check it out in the video below.

Joaquin recalls first yoga class, breaks engagement news

The interview started with Joaquin’s weird account of his first ever yoga class and how the instructor there even got him to do a move called “harness the hog.” Not content with just explaining with words how strange the whole thing was, the actor even got down on the floor to illustrate the move and how “vulnerable” and “exposed” it left him.

Letterman watched in mild surprise, occasionally interjecting that this didn’t sound like yoga, but rather like something nastier.

Then, towards the end of this particular conversation, a smiling Joaquin added, “then, we started dating.” Clearly not able to hold it in anymore, he continued that by saying that he thought she was the one and that they were engaged. He hoped they would marry, “if all goes well, yeah.”

Phoenix would not name his fiancée, having said in a recent interview with a men’s magazine that he would not comment on his personal life because being in the spotlight himself was difficult enough and he had no intention of dragging her in as well.

Joaquin Phoenix, proof that an A-list can fly under the radar

This goes out to all celebrities who complain they can’t get any privacy from the paparazzi or the tabloids, and that all they want in life is to lead a “normal” existence and be left alone. Such a thing is possible, like Joaquin Phoenix’s example perfectly illustrates.

The fact that he didn’t just meet “the one” but that they also got engaged without word of it coming out is proof that celebrities still have a lot of control over what is written about them or how much of their personal life gets out in the media, despite claims to the contrary on their part.

Last we heard, at the end of 2013 and early 2014, Joaquin was dating a 19-year-old DJ named Allie Teilz. She could be the fiancée he’s talking about, in case she also doubles as a yoga instructor, but chances are this is a different woman he’s referring to as “the one.”

Here is Joaquin’s surprise announcement. We have a feeling he chose Letterman to break the news because the talk show host is still reportedly mad at him for the 2009 stunt interview in which Phoenix acted like a crazy person as part of the PR campaign for the mockumentary “I’m Still Here.” That video is below as well.
