14 DAY TRIAL // Joaquin Phoenix’s debut as a rapper may still be a mystery to the millions who have come to love his acting, despite his rep’s claims, but that does not mean that the actor is not determined to make the best of trying. In a recent interview, Phoenix explains that it’s not just his career that is changing, as also is his style, meaning, he’s moving to homeless chic to distance himself from his former acting persona.
When Phoenix made his debut as a rapper a few weeks back in a Las Vegas club, much to the delight of fans who truly did not expect such a debacle to take place right before their eyes, it was still uncertain why he also looked like a bum off the street. The explanation comes now from the actor / rapper himself, who says that it’s just his way of showing the world that he’s ready to move on from Hollywood.
Joaquin admits, as quoted by The Sun, that keeping up with what the world saw him as was “very much an effort,” which is why he simply decided to let himself go and just be. “People know me as this kind of thing and in some ways I don’t know that this is my look. It’s been important for me to just do something that’s extreme – that really separates me from that public Joaquin Phoenix persona, whatever the [expletive] that is.” the actor explains, adding, “Or maybe I’m just lazy.”
As reported a while back, a possibly inebriated Phoenix performed in a Las Vegas club in what was thought to be his “rap debut.” While cameras were rolling, reportedly documenting his transition from one career to another (with Casey Affleck at the helm), and speculation about the whole rap thing had it that it was nothing more than just a hoax, his rep is adamant that Joaquin’s intentions are genuine.
“The transition from one career to another is never seamless. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Joaquin came from a musical family, in addition to winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Johnny Cash. He intends on exploring his musical interests despite speculative, negative, or positive reactions.” the rep revealed in a press statement at the time.
