Joan Rivers loved nothing more than to see people laugh. The legendary comedienne died this week at the age of 81, from complications stemming from botched surgery, and her peers are paying tribute to her in a way they know she would have liked: by cracking jokes.

Hours after news of her death broke, late night hosts honored Joan’s impressive career (she’d been working non-stop in showbiz for nearly 6 decades) by taking a few moments from the usual programming to speak about her as a person and an entertainer.

Kimmel and ex-girlfriend Sarah Silverman, who was his guest on the show right after Joan’s death, did it by doing what she would have best appreciated: cracking crude jokes about each other. You can see that in the video below.

If you know anything about Joan Rivers and her work, you will agree with me that this is the perfect tribute for her. For her, life and death were both fair game as writing material, and she believed that a good laugh can make even the worst day better.

She wouldn’t have liked to know that her fans were crying for her, especially since she led such a long, happy and fulfilled life. She had no regrets about anything, so she always said she could die any minute and be at peace with the idea. Well, she did want her grandson to be gay, but not even the great Joan Rivers gets to have it all.

Joan will be laid to rest tomorrow, September 7 in New York.
