Jessica Simpson isn’t just your average celebrity when it comes to signing an endorsement deal with a weight loss company because, she says in a new interview, she doesn’t really care what people think of her and her post-pregnancy body. She does care, however, about staying healthy, and that’s why she’s on Weight Watchers.

Right after giving birth to her first child, daughter Maxwell, Jessica lost about 50 pounds (22.6 kg), she says in a new interview with USA Today. She’d gained a lot of weight because, she explains, for the first time ever, she felt like she could eat whatever she wanted and not count calories.

“I kind of let loose, and I gained a lot,” she says. She went on the program the moment her doctor told her it would be ok to lose weight but she wasn’t even done shedding all the pounds she’d put on while pregnant, that she got pregnant again.

However, she’d learned her lesson as far as pigging out goes. “[I gained] what a normal pregnant woman would gain. I did put on a good amount with Ace,” she says.

Throughout her second pregnancy, she didn’t just eat less, she also kept on exercising, which usually meant taking long walks with her fiancé Eric Johnson, to whom she lovingly refers as “my almost-husband.”

“I tried to get 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. I wasn’t trying to lose weight. I didn’t mind gaining weight,” Jessica says, adding that, after the birth, when her doctor told her it was ok to do so, she “jumped back on Weight Watchers.”

Though recent photos confirm that Jessica is almost back to her pre-pregnancy body, she says she didn’t do it because she’s vain or, for that matter, trying to get people at home to say nice things about her.

In all her years in the industry, Jessica has learned her lesson and, though it’s a bitter one, she’s happy she did.

“[I am on a mission] to be the best version of myself and to feel great. I want to be a great mom and a great example to my kids… People are going to talk about this no matter what. I might as well choose to live a healthy lifestyle,” she says.

“It does get old having people harping on how much you weigh or your body after pregnancy. I need to feel comfortable in my own skin. People are going to pick me apart no matter what I do. I’m always going to have critics out there who will make a story out of something,” Jessica continues.
