This is Jesse James’ chance to redeem himself in the eyes of millions, by having the truth about him out there. In preparation for the release of his upcoming tell-all book, “American Outlaw,” the star has released the cover art.

Instead of choosing a photo of himself in a suit, or in a tee in his workshop, James went for something a bit more dramatic for the artwork for the book: himself as a gunslinger.

The book arrives in stores at the beginning of May (on the 3rd, to be more precise) and, with it, James promises his fans a ride they will never forget – and also one that will set the record straight, he says for People magazine.

“I’ve lived a pretty crazy life,” he says for the celebrity publication. This included a difficult and violent childhood, commitment issues and failed marriages and, last but not least, his struggle with addiction.

“My life has been defined by many things and not just the events of the last year,” he says, adding that he hopes “American Outlaw” will show just that.

In other words, he’s more than just the man who cheated on Sandra Bullock with a tattoo model, who broke her heart and thus crossed all her fans.

“I just wanted [the memoir] to be a good story, a page-turner and hopefully people will see it as that,” he adds for the aforementioned publication.

As for the photo on the cover, James said he didn’t want “some variation of a bad prom photo, serious Thinker pose like most book jackets show.”

This is why he went for the whole gunslinger thing, complete with his own .44 Magnum. “I just wanted something different. I wasn’t going to mail it in,” he stresses.

In the end, the book will help people understand that, where they were once so quick to judge him, they hardly have all the facts on him.

“People claim to know everything about me, when they actually know nothing. But once you read this, you will know everything – the whole story, right here,” he explains.
