Here’s a problem that many female celebrities come across, as per their own words: right before or shortly after their breakthrough in the industry, they’re told they need to lose weight to increase their chances at success. When she was just getting started, Jennifer Lopez too had a similar experience.

The diva is gracing the Winter 2013 issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas, and talks about the challenges she faced at the start of her career and how she managed to overcome them.

As it turns out, she was no stranger to indirect advice or straightforward recommendations to lose weight because that would make her more popular. Luckily, she never gave in to these and she’s mighty proud of it.

“Early on, my family really made me love who I was and what I looked like. My body was nothing out of the ordinary in my neighborhood. When I first started on television [as a Fly Girl on In Living Color], people, and even my own manager at the time, would tell me I had to make all of these changes,” JLo recalls.

“But you have to stand up and say, ‘There’s nothing wrong with me or my shape or who I am, you’re the one with the problem!’ And when you can really believe that, all of a sudden other people start believing too,” she continues.

She probably didn’t imagine she’d become very famous for her curvy body but, years later, this is precisely what happened. Reports even claim that Lopez’s backside got even more famous than her at one point and that, afraid of the worst, she had it insured for a shameless amount of money.

We’ll probably never know the truth of this but, whatever it might be, it’s amazing to have someone as popular and successful as she is telling women of all ages that they should not do what others believe is right for their bodies.

Jennifer has always been about confidence and, just as important, health: she’s curvy but, make no mistake, she puts in a lot of effort to look her best, eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise.
