Actor says his character is nothing like the deadly 007

If anyone ever wondered who would win a fight or who would be better in all respects from Jason Bourne and James Bond, both legendary onscreen characters, wonder no more. Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in all three films, and the fourth, which is now in the making, says that Bond pales in comparison to his character, for being nothing but the product of a machine that is focused solely on making profit.

Speaking with the media on the occasion of the Presidential Inauguration, topics such as his personal life and his movies were also tackled, and, much to the surprise of the interviewers, Damon would have no comparison between Bourne and Bond. Not only are they different in terms of what they stand for, the actor says, but they are also shaped in such a way as to stand miles apart. Also, Bourne is unmatchable in all respects, Damon points out.

“They could never make a James Bond movie like any of the Bourne films.” Damon explained. “Because Bond is an imperialist, misogynist sociopath who goes around bedding women and swilling martinis and killing people. He’s repulsive.” he adds, thus becoming the first celebrity to ever speak badly of the 007 agent. Not only that, but Damon also makes a contrasting note with the general consensus in Hollywood, namely that there is no more to Bond’s character than killing men and women.

In the same interview, Matt Damon has also hinted that he has seen the Bond franchise, one of the most successful and loved in the history of cinema, as no more than a money-making machine. Bond means selling out for the actor who, as to his own admission, never feels that way whenever he accepts one scrip or another.

“Steve [Soderbergh, who produced Damon’s 2005 ‘Syriana’] told me that years ago he was offered a Bond movie. He told them he’d do it if they gave him creative control. ‘Absolutely not,’ they said. They have a formula, they stick to it, and it makes them a lot of money. They know what they’re doing, and they’re going to keep doing it.” Damon explains.

Matt Damon is said to be currently working on “Untitled Jason Bourne Project,” scheduled for a tentative release in 2010.
