Can also hover or roll around on the ground to reach virtually any location

Scientists at the Japanese Ministry of Defense have recently demonstrated one of the coolest flying machines we have seen to date, which takes the form of a sphere and can hover as well as walk on the ground.

The yet unnamed contraction can reach speeds up to 60Km/h (37.2m/h) in flight, even though it weights just 350 gram (12oz) and measures 42cm (16.5-inch) in diameter.

You can take a look at the robot in the video enclosed above this post, where you will also see how the sphere can move around on the ground using the same control surfaces that were designed to steer the robot during flight.

The best thing about the Japanese machine is that is built only using off-the-shelf parts, the price of these reaching just $1,400 (roughly 1,000 Euros).

Geek.com says that Japanese scientists hope to use this machine in rescue missions to reach locations that are otherwise inaccessible to traditional flying or ground vehicles.
