This past Sunday night, August 18, Japan's Sakurajima volcano began erupting. Witnesses and specialists say the ash plumes did not take long to reach heights of about 5,000 meters (roughly 16,000 feet).

Because of this, many now claim that this eruption is the largest to have been recorded in decades.

According to Daily Mail, the Sakurajima volcano sits on the island of Kyushu, fairly close to the city of Kagoshima.

In the aftermath of the eruption, people living in the volcano's proximity were left with no choice except wear masks that were supposed to keep them from breathing in the volcanic ash that was hovering in the air.

For the time being, no injuries have been reported.
