The Nintendo 3DS handheld has managed to once again top the hardware chart for the Japanese market as compiled by tracking firm Media Create as the newly launched PlayStation Vita from Sony has dropped to the lowest sales level since its late 2011 launch.

For the week that ended on January 15 the Nintendo 3DS has managed to move 100,668 units, which is a significant decline from the 197,952 that it had managed during the previous seven day period.

The decline might continue as customers recover from holiday shipping and less high profile titles are launched on the Japanese market.

The PlayStation 3 has managed to take the second place in the hardware chart, with sales of 30,332 units, a drop of more than 50 percent when compared to the previous week.

The older version of the PlayStation Portable handheld has also declined sharply, selling 22,538 units, a drop of more than 40,000 units when compared to the week that ended on January 8.

But this was still higher than the numbers posted by the PlayStation Vita, which is now down to 18,361 devices sold, coming from 42,648.

The Wii is just over 14,000 units sold in one week, more than the DSi LL, the Xbox 360, the DSi and the PlayStation 2.

Media Create is no longer reporting sales of the first version of the Nintendo DS handheld.

When it comes to video games the leader is a new release Super Robot Taise OG Saga Masou Kishin II from Namco Bandai for the PSP, which managed to sell 81,996 copies during its launch week, while second spot was occupied by Mario Kart 7 from Nintendo and third place on the podium was occupied by Monster Hunter 3G from Capcom.

The rest of the top ten is made up of: Super Mario 3D Land, Inazuma Eleven Go, Musou Orochi 2, Spirit Camera, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble, Just Dance Wii.
