Singer faces scrutiny just like Renee Zellweger

It’s getting increasingly difficult to be a celebrity, especially if you’re a woman and past 40 years of age, because certain media outlets will take any public appearance as an invitation to speculate on the kind of plastic surgery you may or may not have had done on your face.

It happened to Renee Zellweger first, and then to reality star Kate Gosselin, and it’s now singer Janet Jackson’s turn to be bullied like this.

The singer made a rare appearance over the weekend at the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience Gala dinner, her first in almost 2 years. Attached to this article is a photo snapped on the occasion.

Something is off, she must have had plastic surgery

British tabloid Daily Mail has more photos – and it also leads the way for other media outlets and celebrity bloggers to speculate on the kind of work Janet must have had. Because the Mail starts from the premise that the only reason the singer looks so “different” is that she had work on her face.

It notes the “severely arched eyebrows” and the “puffier face” as tell-tale signs of surgery, and concludes that she looks “different.” It also says that Janet didn’t smile and seemed in a very bad mood, just like the bodyguards accompanying her – hence, she must have had some work done because she was eager to slip by unnoticed.

Indeed, we have arrived at a point where one celebrity’s unwillingness to pose for photos, whether on red carpet appearances or not, equates confirmation that they’re hiding something, which, in turn, always means plastic surgery.

Janet Jackson looks “different” because she’s gained some weight

After this “analysis,” even the Mail concedes: “The change in her face may have just been due to a change in her weight.”

If you look at the photo closely, you will see that this is actually the case: Janet, who has always struggled with keeping her weight in check, is carrying a few extra pounds. This isn’t a bad thing, because she’s always been a beautiful woman and the extra weight does nothing to alter that, but it’s a far less spectacular piece of news than saying she must have had work done.

If anything, Janet looks better than ever – and doesn’t seem to have aged a day since the last time we saw her, about 2 years ago. She is 48 years old and she has the same fresh, flawless face as ever.

What stands out about her appearance is how certain media outlets are trying to make the Renee Zellweger-type of scrutiny standard for female celebrities who don’t really like spending that much time in the spotlight.

Just like Renee, Janet isn’t interested in being a celebrity, but the media and bloggers don’t care about that. For as long as that happens, we’ll probably read more speculation on the topic, so brace yourselves.
