DreamWorks and Warner Bros. are inching closer to making an authorized Martin Luther King biopic and they’re considering Jamie Foxx for lead and Oliver Stone to direct it, film publication Variety confirms.

This will be a film authorized by King’s family, which has been in the planning stages for years and which, if it’s made, will make use of King’s speeches, over which the family has copyright.

“The MLK drama is still far away from a greenlight but getting both Stone and Foxx to sign would speed up the process,” Variety notes.

The film “would follow the famous civil rights activist from his rise all the way to his assassination in 1968,” on an original script by Kario Salem.

Steven Spielberg, Suzanne De Passe, Madison Jones, and Samuel Nappi will handle production duties, notes the same media outlet.

Since the project isn’t even greenlit yet, it’s too soon to even speculate on a possible release date.
