It’s not just Jennifer Love Hewitt that would like a role in the biggest and most popular vampire movie franchise ever, “The Twilight Saga.” James Franco also wanted a part in either of the upcoming “Breaking Dawn” movies but was turned down, he says in a new interview.

Franco has managed to keep a low profile so far, after the Oscars debacle, focusing mostly on his studies and other projects.

However, he’s now forced (for lack of a better term) to come out now, because he has a movie to promote: “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” where he plays a scientist.

Speaking to Playboy about this film, his academic career, and why the media seems to be out to get him, Franco also reveals a bit about his movie career that no one knew so far: he actually wanted to land a part in “The Twilight Saga.”

Granted, it wasn’t because he really wanted to be in the film, he says, but rather for a performance art. Nonetheless, Franco campaigned for a role in “Breaking Dawn” and was turned down.

“I had my agent tell [director] Bill Condon that I’d be happy to do anything in Breaking Dawn, but that was because it was supposed to be part of a multimedia project at Yale,” the actor explains.

“I was working with a Yale undergraduate who had written an autobiographical play about putting on a theatrical production of Twilight in which I was a character,” Franco says.

“So I was interested in Twilight because I was going to be part of that play. I thought what a great connection it would be if I were also involved with the real Twilight,” he adds.

Sadly, Condon wouldn’t hear of it, so Franco did not get the part. He doesn’t say if he wanted a specific role or just any one of the new vampires making an appearance in the two “Breaking Dawn” films, based on Stephenie Meyer’s final novel in the series.
