For quite a long time, Sony's PS3 has been widely viewed as the most secure gaming console around, since jailbreaking the device in order to run custom code on it was a feat achieved only a long time after the console was officially launched on the market. Of course, over time, things sort of changed, and Sony, much in the same way as Apple before it, was forced into a cat-and-mouse game with hackers, constantly releasing new firmware updates that only managed to maintain their “un-hacked” status for a relatively limited amount of time. Nowadays, jailbreaking the PS3 is actually a very easy job, even for the large majority of users out there, who don't have the technical know-how to embark on such an “adventure” themselves. And that's because, as Electronista reports, a team of hackers called, quite obviously, PSJailbreak team, announced that their hardware hack now supports PS3 firmware 3.42, 3.50, as well as just about any future firmware update Sony might come up with. If you're curious what we're talking about here, we'll mention that the jailbreak is achieved with the help of an USB mod that allows users to unlock their PS3 to allow unapproved software, including loading other operating systems (such as Linux). Furthermore, the same team has also set up a specialized website called PSdowngrade that, as the name suggests, actually allows users to downgrade their console to a previous firmware version (of course, in order to do so, the respective console has to be running the PS Jailbreak software). Naturally, it remains to be seen just how Sony will react to the actions of the PSJailbreak team, because we're pretty sure that that the Japanese company won't be particularly happy with PS3 owners being able to hack their prized gaming console at will, running whatever software (possibly even “backup copies” of games) they want on it.
