Yesterday, news of a Jack the Ripper game began to surface. According to Superannuation, a trademark filing was spotted, which covers the name of “the Ripper” in relation to entertainment services, movie production and games. Older rumors started by the Los Angeles Times back in July regarding a possible game also seemed to be confirmed by this. Now, Destructoid claims to have the very first details on the game.

Over 121 years after the murders of the first modern serial killer Jack the Ripper, the case still remains unsolved. London's Scotland Yard, one of the most renowned criminal investigation departments, failed to uncover the truth and all sorts of myths and rumors have spread regarding the identity of the Ripper. But Jack has never received a depiction of a dark vigilante or, even better, one of a superhero. Some people seemed offended by the idea of impersonating the infamous slayer and hoped that they would hunt the monster, not be him. But this new look of Jack the Ripper wasn't anticipated by anyone.

Destructoid claim they got their hands on some inside information on the game that describes the nature of the new Jack the Ripper. A vicious killer he won't be and the five women murdered on the streets of London will be reinterpreted as acts of justice. The surgical hands of Jack will be redirected towards the heinous creatures that prowl the dark alleys and make prey of the innocents of the city. He will take the form of a "supernatural slayer protecting people from demons, vampires and other evil monsters." Truth be told, anyone would prefer to be protected by a cold, effective killer than a naive teenager in latex tights.

Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. As unexpected as this may be, it would be the best way to tie up all the loose ends and solve any problems the game might encounter. It continues to focus on a very well known character but also eliminates the controversies that could come up concerning the brutal and violent history of the famous figure. The game also maintains Jack the Ripper as the protagonist, which is sure to please a lot of gamers. If true, it's a pretty smart move from Visceral Games, the developer, and if it's just a rumor it's still a pretty damn good idea that should be seriously taken into consideration.
