On October 16, Charles Elachi – the director of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in Pasadena, California – received the prestigious Arthur M. Bueche Award from the US National Academy of Engineering, in recognition of his life's work.

The prize was awarded to Elachi for “extraordinary impact through work in the engineering profession,” during the NAE annual meeting, which was held on October 16 in Washington, DC.

The JPL leader is also praised for “innovations in planetary remote sensing science and technology, and distinguished leadership in creating government, university and industry partnerships and space technology policies.”

“This award is deeply meaningful to me, as it comes from an organization that has some of the most outstanding engineers in the country,” Elachi said at the meeting.
