Video game developer Ironclad Games has officially announced that it is working on a new video game called Sins of a Dark Age, a free-to-play fantasy-themed strategy game that uses a fantasy theme and mixes actual action with strategy.

Players in Sins of a Dark Age will be able to take on the role of either a Hero or a Commander and the game will pair these roles up in order to tackle a number of challenges, with the Heroes doing battle on the front lines while the Commander direct their overall strategy.

The game will include a variety of factions, Heroes and Commanders and, as they take part in more battles, they will gain experience and will open up more customization options.

The game offers both battles against the Artificial Intelligence of the game and team versus team engagements that only involve human players.

Blair Fraser, a co-founder and producer at Ironclad Games, stated when the announcement was made that, “Sins of a Dark Age is something totally unique in the strategy genre. Like Sins of a Solar Empire, which blended 4x with real-time strategy, we’ve taken our favorite elements of traditional RTS and action RTS and added our own twists and turns that result in a completely new and unrivalled strategy experience.”

Sins of a Dark Age also includes replay options, spectating and a number of mechanics designed to minimize the potential for griefing and create a welcoming environment both for long time strategy fans and for newcomers.

Frasier added, “Sins of a Dark Age is a totally new and unique strategy experience that combines elements of the Traditional RTS and the Action RTS. We took the best parts of each, innovated on both, and added our own twists and turns resulting in something unlike any other strategy game. Despite all this we still feel it is remarkably accessible for new and veteran players alike.”

A beta stage is planned for the summer of 2012.
