The North American and European divisions of SEGA announced having entered into a partnership with Marvel Entertainment, the comic book company, to develop and then publish a videogame that would accompany the release of the Iron Man 2 movie, which is supposed to be launched in 2010.

SEGA says that the upcoming videogame will arrive on multiplayer platforms, which probably means all the game consoles that are still selling at the moment, and that it is working hard in order to make sure that it creates a new taste, based on a fresh game engine, which offers “an entirely new and enhanced gameplay experience” to all the fans of the Iron Man character.

Simon Jefferym, who is the president of SEGA of America, stated that “We are thrilled to build on the success of the Iron Man phenomenon and work with Marvel and Paramount on another epic project. Sega and Marvel are collaborating closely to ensure we deliver an authentic Iron Man experience.”

SEGA has also published a videogame to accompany the first Iron Man movie, which was released in 2008. The movie won praise for the acting of Robert Downey Jr. and also for the way it managed to get to the heart of the Iron Man character, while also offering a very enjoyable action movie. Meanwhile, the videogame companion earned less than favorable reviews as the controls were judged to be frustrated while the gameplay itself felt pretty repetitive. It looked good, but it just didn't deliver as an action game.

Historically speaking, comic books have not proved to be material suitable to be turned into videogames but at the moment, with more and more movie adaptations of comic books being box office hits, developers are also turning to Iron Man and Superman to deliver interesting games. 2010 will see the release of Iron Man 2: The Videogame, but also of Sony's MMO DC Universe Online.
